Truth or Fiction – Fad Diets
Fad diets are everywhere, and lots of people participate in them. It’s easy to be attracted to such weight loss methods — after all, seeing testimonials on television from people who’ve had results from a specialty diet would make anyone want to try it out.
These glamorous diets aren’t what they seem, however, and don’t have the long term results and effects that you might think they do. Recognizing what these diets do and don’t do for your body might be the difference between real, healthy weight loss and a temporary solution that could even do more harm than good.
Stats Don’t Lie
So, you’re watching TV and you see an ad for a diet that promises a 30-pound weight loss in just one month. It sounds wonderful, but the truth of the matter is that you’ll more than likely gain that weight back and then some in no time at all.
A recent study showed that fad diets generally lead to a small amount of weight loss in a short period of time — generally 5 to 10 percent of your weight. After the diet was over, however, most people abandoned it and went back to their normal eating habits. After five years, the study found, 83 percent showed a higher weight gain than the weight they originally lost.
Essentially, in the long term, fad dieting can cause you to become overweight rather than keep off weight in a healthy and responsible way.
Types Of Fad Diets
There are lots and lots of fad diets to look out for, and many of them involve cutting out certain foods of focusing on one in particular to help lose weight. The grapefruit cleanse is a popular diet, as are the many low-carb diets on the market and even something called the cookie diet.
There’s no shortage of attractive television diets out there, not to mention the significant number of diet pills and weight loss supplements that pop up everywhere you go.
A good way to know if something is a fad diet is by identifying certain aspects of it. If it promises a specific amount of weight loss in a short time, or if it’s a plan that advertises weight loss without exercise, it’s a fad diet.
Those just typically do not work in the long term, as statistics have proven. Actually losing weight and becoming healthy on a long term basis is actually much simpler in some respects, and it really just involves two things — eating healthier and exercising.
What To Do Instead
At the end of the day, the best and most effective method for weight loss and weight maintenance is healthy eating and exercise. Getting the right nutrients — which many fad diets are void of — is key, as is remaining active in some way on a daily basis to help burn calories and keep your body in shape. Portion control is also important when it comes to losing and maintaining weight. It’s easy to eat massive portions of food — and eating too much of even the healthiest food imaginable has its consequences
Eating a good, balanced variety of food is key, as is staying active every day. Another important thing to keep in mind is that when you go about losing weight the right way, it’s not a diet but a lifestyle change. The only way to truly lose and keep off weight is to make a change and stick to it — don’t think of it as a quick solution, as quick doesn’t always mean good.
If you can identify the risks of fad diets, what qualifies as one and what you should do instead to make a positive change in your eating habits, you’ll find that the weight will come off much easier and stay off.
